Window Light Rocks

I know a lot of people who want to get a fancy lighting set up… but some of my favorite portraits were done with window light!!

This was taken in a large warehouse…I angled the grey backdrop so it caught a bit of the light from the huge, open warehouse door. I had my model focus on something close by, and filled the darker side of her body/hair with a large white reflector.

The first shot (girl in black dress looking to her side) was taken with a Hasselblad 500 cm 6×6 film camera.

The second shot is the same girl in a red dress – EXACTLY the same set up – but facing head-on to the large door. It was taken with a Canon 1Ds MkII camera and my favourite Canon lens, the 85mm f/1.2L.

The 3rd shot was taken with my old Speed Graphic Pacemaker large format 4×5 film camera – combined with the massive Kodak Aero Ektar lens from world war 2 (see here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/stophoto/4465052086/ ). Shot with the same set up. I shot this at f/2.5 – which is wide open with this huge lens. It gives a very soft look at that f stop as you can see. It was taken on the Fujifilm 100b45 black and white film and an old 545 Polaroid back cropped to square format.

Window light rules!!!
